Surgical tapes, also known as medical adhesives, consist of two key components: the backing (or carrier) and the adhesive material. During the manufacturing process, the adhesive is applied to the backing through a method known as “coating.” The backing can be made from various materials, including non-woven fabric, synthetic cloth, polyurethane, or polyester. Depending on the design, the backing may be transparent, have a silky texture, or resemble paper. It can also vary in structure, ranging from solid sheets to mesh-like designs with pores for breathability.
The adhesive used in medical and surgical tapes is typically acrylic or silicone-based, with latex being much less common due to allergy concerns. In some cases, solvents are used in the adhesive to facilitate the coating process.
These surgical tapes are classified as medical devices by the FDA and are widely used in clinical settings, hospitals, and by patients. They are essential for securing wound care dressings, such as gauze, wound pads, IV lines, surgical drains, and medicated patches. It can secure primary wound dressings over wounds as well tubes, drains, iv lines, and other medical devices and tools onver skin. It requires scissors to be sued for cutting to the length desired. After cutting to the length desired, the release sheet has to be removed from that piece before the tape can be placed on the skin or the devices. The tape is also latex-free to minimize allergic reactions in patients. In Spanish surgical tapes and medical adhesives are called: Cinta medica, cinta quirúrgica or tape quirúrgico
