How can you prevent the sponge from getting moldy or developing algae?

33 pod labels are included in the package to prevent the sponge from developing moldy/algae. You can also cover the sponge with an opaque film, such as tin foil.

What should you do if the plants grow too lush?

Spreading leaves that grow too quickly must be trimmed to make sure that slow-growing plants get enough light to thrive and produce big yields.

Why does it not bloom or bear fruit?

Make sure the nutrition is enough and use the Flowers&Fruits Mode. Keep in mind to add water while adding a proportionate amount of nutrients.
